Can I Put a Prescription in The Hook? | William Painter
Yes, you can. If you already own The Hook, or any William Painter titanium frame, send it in and we will fit it with custom prescription lenses, then ship it back ready to wear. You keep the frame you love, bottle opener and all, and we handle the optics. Building a brand-new prescription pair from scratch is coming soon. For now, the send-in route is open.
Here is how it works.
The send-in process, step by step
- Start in the builder. Open the Prescription Lens Builder and choose "I have a William Painter pair," then pick the model you own.
- Configure your lenses. Choose your prescription type, lens material, and any extras like anti-glare, blue-light filtering, or sunglass tints. Enter your prescription and PD, or upload a photo of your script.
- Check out. You pay for the lenses only. There is no frame charge, because you are sending in a frame you already have.
- Mail your frame in. Within one business day we email you a prepaid shipping label. Drop your frame in any mailbox.
- We fit and return. Our optical lab cuts your lenses to your exact prescription, fits them into your frame, and ships your pair back ready to wear, typically within 7 to 10 business days of receiving it.
No optometrist appointment is needed to place the order, though you do need a current prescription.
What lenses you can get
Plenty. The builder walks you through each choice and shows live pricing as you go.
- Prescription type: Single Vision for one field of view, or Progressive for distance, intermediate, and reading in one lens with no visible line.
- Lens material: Standard, Polycarbonate for a lighter and more impact-resistant lens, or High-Index 1.67 for the thinnest option on stronger prescriptions.
- Lens style: Clear, Blue-Light filtering, Transitions that adapt to light, or sunglass tints in polarized and non-polarized, mirror, gradient, and solid finishes.
- Add-ons: Anti-glare coating and more.
So whether you want everyday clear lenses, prescription polarized sunglasses for driving and the water, or blue-light lenses for screen time, you can build the pair you actually wear.
What to have ready
- A current prescription. Type in the values for each eye, including ADD for progressives, or upload a photo or PDF of your script.
- Your PD (pupillary distance). This positions the optical center of each lens in front of your pupil. It takes about two minutes to measure at home. See our guide on how to measure your PD. The builder also links a guided tool if you prefer your phone.
Why put your prescription in a William Painter frame
Because the frame is the part worth keeping. Our frames are machined from aerospace-grade titanium, so they are light, corrosion-resistant, and built to take a beating, and every pair is backed by our lifetime warranty. Adding your prescription means the pair you want to wear every day is also the pair you can see through. The bottle opener stays right where it is.
A few things worth knowing
- Lenses are made to order. Because they are cut specifically for you, prescription lenses are non-returnable, so double-check your prescription and PD before you order.
- You keep your frame. The send-in process fits lenses into the frame you already own. We are not replacing it.
- One frame per order. Each prescription order covers the frame you send in.
